WHITBY'S gleaming new £1m lifeboat station is now in operation and will provide the crew with a base to be proud of for generations to come.
The new boathouse boasts modern facilities allowing the crew to carry out their duties and training under one roof.

The ground floor houses the inshore boat and crew equipment along with a workshop and showers.

The top floor features two training rooms along with the control room and galley.

The new boat house is far more spacious than the old one and will feature dedicated crew changing and training areas as well as a workshop to house and work on the inshore lifeboat.

When a call comes through, the inshore boat will be wheeled out and crane-lifted into the water next to the pontoon.

Both the crane and pontoon were bought using £130,000 raised by the appeal team.

With the extra space available, the crew will be able to carry out more training using their own equipment.

Whereas before the crew had to rent places to do their training, they can now have one crew doing first aid while others can do navigation work in another.

Plus it will be used for committee meetings, fund-raisers and the Friends of Whitby Lifeboat meetings.

All the money raised for the building came through fund-raising and donations as money raised for Whitby Lifeboat Station was held in a special account by the RNLI before being released for the project.

It means the building was built on the hard work and generous support of the people of Whitby who are always the first to recognise the vital job carried out by the brave men of the crew.

A special time capsule has been hidden somewhere in the building and contains pictures, books and CDs showing the proud history of the Whitby and the Lifeboat.

In future years it will give an insight into the prestigious past of the crew and its boathouse which features a tribute to perhaps the most famous lifeboatman of them all.

It is a base the crew and importantly the town can look upon with a great deal of pride and will become the focal point for lifeboat operations in Whitby for many years to come
