SIX people were towed to safety after their yacht suffered an electrical fault out at sea. Staithes RNLI lifeboat launched at 10.10am on Saturday to assist the disabled yacht which was close to the shore off Staithes.
The yacht’s skipper had contacted Humber Coastguard to report that he had no electrical power and could not start his engine or hoist his sails.
With an onshore wind and danger of the yacht blowing ashore, Staithes and Whitby lifeboats were launched.
Staithes lifeboat reached the 30ft vessel within seven minutes and began to pull the yacht further offshore and started to head towards Whitby.
The tow was then transferred to Whitby lifeboat off Port Mulgrave at around 10.50am and the yacht was safely taken to Whitby harbour. Published Date: 01 May 2007
